What is a Driving Licence Verification API?
A Driving Licence Verification API confirms that a driving licence number corresponds to a genuine, currently valid licence, and returns the holder’s details along with the vehicle classes they are authorised to drive.
How it works
The business submits the licence number and, usually, the holder’s date of birth. The API checks transport authority records and returns the licence status, validity dates, issuing authority, holder name, and the classes of vehicle covered. Why vehicle class matters more than validity
A licence being valid is the check most businesses run and the one that answers the least. The operationally important field is class: a licence valid for a two-wheeler does not authorise driving a commercial goods vehicle, and a fleet that verifies only validity will onboard drivers who are not legally permitted to operate its vehicles.
Validity dates deserve equal attention. A licence that expires three weeks after onboarding will pass a one-off check and create a compliance problem shortly afterwards, which is an argument for periodic re-verification rather than verification only at onboarding.
What it does not establish
That the person presenting the licence is its holder. Licence verification confirms the document; confirming the person requires a face match against the licence photograph.
It also does not surface driving history, endorsements or claims record, which sit in different systems.
Where it is used
Ride-hailing and delivery fleets onboarding drivers at volume, logistics and transport operators, vehicle rental and self-drive businesses, insurance underwriting, and employment verification for roles that involve driving.
