What is a UAN?
A UAN (Universal Account Number) is the twelve-digit number issued by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation to an employee covered by provident fund contributions. It is deliberately portable: the same UAN follows the individual across employers for the whole of their working life, with each job appearing as a separate member ID linked beneath it.
That portability is what makes the UAN useful outside payroll. It is one of the few identifiers in India that ties a person to a verifiable, dated employment history held by a third party the employee cannot edit.
What a UAN lookup can establish
- That the individual is or has been in formal employment covered by provident fund contributions.
- The employer name associated with a member ID, and the period of that association.
- The name and details on record, which can be compared against the applicant’s declared identity through name matching.
Why lenders and HR platforms use it
For an unsecured lender, employment is the underwriting variable most often misstated on an application — an inflated employer name, an exaggerated tenure, or a job that ended months earlier. A UAN check tests that claim against records the applicant did not create. For staffing and gig platforms it serves a different purpose: confirming a worker’s stated history during onboarding, and detecting duplicate or borrowed identities across a large contractor base.
Practical limitations
- Only formal, covered employment appears. Self-employed applicants, workers at establishments below the coverage threshold and much of the informal economy have no UAN at all — absence is not evidence of a false claim.
- Employer filings lag. Recent joiners may not yet show against the new employer, so a short gap is normal rather than suspicious.
- Multiple UANs exist where an employee was allotted a new number instead of having the old one linked, so a “no record” result sometimes reflects a data problem, not a fabrication.
Where the applicant knows only their mobile number, a mobile-to-UAN lookup retrieves the number before the employment details are fetched.
