What is the EPFO?
The EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation) administers India’s statutory provident fund, pension and insurance schemes for employees, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Employers above the prescribed coverage threshold must register and file monthly contributions for eligible employees, which means the EPFO holds a continuously updated record of formal employment across a very large share of the organised workforce.
In verification work the EPFO matters not as a scheme administrator but as a data authority. Its member records — keyed to a UAN — are third-party evidence of who employs a person and since when.
What the records contain
- The employee’s UAN, and the member IDs generated by each employer.
- The establishment associated with each member ID.
- The period over which contributions were filed, which approximates tenure.
- Identity details as declared to the EPFO by the employer and employee.
How it is used in onboarding and underwriting
Lenders use EPFO-derived employment confirmation to test income stability claims before disbursing an unsecured loan. Background verification providers use it to corroborate a candidate’s stated history without waiting on a former employer to answer an email. Gig and staffing platforms use it during worker onboarding to detect borrowed or duplicated identities. In each case the check is doing the same job: replacing a self-declared claim with a record held elsewhere.
What it cannot tell you
EPFO records show that contributions were filed, not what someone earns today, whether they are still attending work, or what their designation is. They cover only employment inside the statutory net, so a genuine applicant working for an uncovered establishment or on a professional contract will show nothing. Treating a blank result as a negative finding is the most common misuse of this data source.
Employment checks also carry a consent and data-protection obligation. Collect the purpose-specific consent, retain only what the decision requires, and be able to show why the check was run.
