What is signature verification?
Signature verification is the comparison of a signature against a known specimen to judge whether both were made by the same person. Despite decades of digital alternatives it remains embedded in Indian financial operations — on cheques, account opening forms, loan agreements, insurance proposals, claim forms and mandates — because the signature is what a great deal of paperwork is legally built around.
The core problem is that no two genuine signatures are identical. A person’s own signature varies with speed, posture, pen, surface and mood, so the task is never exact comparison; it is deciding whether the observed variation falls inside a genuine writer’s normal range.
Static and dynamic verification
Static, or offline, verification works from an image of a completed signature — scanned from a form or cropped from a cheque. It compares geometric and structural features: proportions, stroke direction and curvature, relative spacing, pen-lift positions and pressure artefacts visible in the ink.
Dynamic, or online, verification captures the act of signing on a digitiser or touchscreen, recording the timing, velocity, acceleration, pressure and pen-up sequence. It is considerably harder to forge because it captures behaviour rather than appearance — but it only exists where signing happened on an instrumented device, which excludes the entire back catalogue of paper documents.
The forgery types being defended against
- Random forgery — the forger does not know what the genuine signature looks like. Easy to detect.
- Simple forgery — the forger knows the name but has not seen the signature, and writes it in their own hand.
- Skilled forgery — the forger has studied and practised the genuine signature. This is where automated and manual verification both struggle, and where dynamic capture or a documented escalation path earns its keep.
- Traced forgery — produced by tracing an original, which often betrays itself through unnatural hesitation and uniform speed.
How it is used operationally
Banks and insurers hold a specimen signature on record and compare each instruction against it. At volume — cheque clearing, bulk mandate processing, claim intake — a person cannot look at every one, so automated comparison produces a similarity score and only a defined band reaches a human verifier.
As with name matching and liveness, the thresholds are a policy choice with real costs on both sides: too strict and genuine cheques are returned and customers are inconvenienced; too loose and forged instructions clear. Sampling outcomes and retuning periodically matters more than the initial setting.
